ABOUT US
Welcome the BP2 Podcast the podcast from the Black Presence in British Portraiture Network.
We’re a group of scholars, museum professionals and collectors with a passion for discovering, understanding and presenting the black African presence in British portraiture from around 1500 to 1800.
The network was brought together by Dr Miranda Kaufmann with goal of holding a major exhibition of these works at a leading British Gallery. Working with Jenifer Cooper together they have developed a database of portraits of Africans in British Art, from around 1500 to 1800, taking the Menil Collection records at the Warburg Institute in London as a starting point, the database now has some 400 entries and continues to grow with input from the network.
The network believes research is important in order to identify the individuals portrayed, and if no names or details are to be found in local parish registers or household accounts or similar, then the white families they were associated will be researched with in order to interrogate their colonial connections.
Each BP2 Podcast will bring the induvial in the database to life will highlight a work from the database through a discussion about the work followed by a reading associated with the work.
